If you have ever read any form of nutrition article, then chances are you’ve been lied to in some way.
Whether by the latest nutrition writer, by the nutrition companies, by the doctors, or by the people at your gym, some one has told you "the one magic thing you need to do to radically improve your nutrition”. It seems that these days, everyone is out promoting their own agenda, telling us that their way is the only way.
It’s for this very reason that we think it is important that we explain our “unified theory” of nutrition. We stick to a very simplified approach to nutrition. What we have found is that no matter what diet you are following, whether it be low-carb, low-fat, Zone or Atkins, and no matter what guru you speak to, everyone will agree with one, maybe two “facts” of nutrition:
Everyone will agree that we need more fruits and vegetables in our diet. And most people will agree that we eat too much food. So the grrlAthlete approach to nutrition is simply:
“Reduce overall caloric intake, and substantially increase fruits and vegetables intake.”
It sounds simple, because it is. But far more important then its degree of simplicity is the fact that it works. Anyone who has changed their diet according to these two simple rules has made dramatic improvements in their physique, and that’s why we think that they are the two golden rules of nutrition. And the best part is they can be applied no matter what diet you are following (low-carb or high-carb).
Nutrition for sports performance is a bit more complicated only in that it also involves timing your meals around your sporting activities and making sure you are eating enough calories to support your athletic activities. Generally, nutrition for sport does not vary greatly from nutrition for health. It involves an abundance of fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods and lean protein sources.
These are the general rules that we recommend, however on our nutrition page you will find all of our nutrition interviews and articles we have compiled over the years. You may notice that there are many articles with sometimes contradicting theories. From our experience, there is no clear evidence that any one type of diet is significantly better than the other for overall health (with the exception of starvation diets and other fad diets that don’t have an ounce of common sense). Every diet is useful for some group of people and sometimes different diets may be effective for the same person at different times. This is why you will see conflicting theories from different experts within our pages. They have all had success with different nutrition protocols.
There are many different theories found within the pages, so feel free to give them a read, experiment and find the one that works best for you.
Sincerely,
The Team at grrlAthlete.com
